Katerina Skalkou is an Architect (Dipl.- Eng), graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2002, Hons). She holds a Masters Degree (MPhil) in “Design-Space-Culture” from the National Technical University of Athens (2004, Hons) and a Master of Arts (MA) in “Lighting Design” from Hellenic Open University (2015, Hons). Since 2021 she is a PhD candidate in the Department of Interior Architecture of the School of Applied Arts and Culture of UNIWA on “The contribution of lighting to the dining experience and the formulation of a specialized design theory.” Since 2018 she is an academic fellow at UNIWA teaching the courses of “Sustainable Design I & II” while since 2017 is an Adjunct Professor of Hellenic Open University at the Postgraduate Studies Program “Lighting Design” teaching the course “Art, light and psychology of perception”. Also, she is a collaborating researcher of the “Space, aesthetics, sustainability” laboratory based at the Department of Interior Architecture (School of Applied Arts at the University of West Attica). Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece since 2002, member of the Hellenic Institute of Architects (Heliarch) and founding member of HELiA (Hellenic Lighting Association). She has a 2nd class Design degree in Architectural studies, Special Architectural studies (categories 6 & 7) as well as a 1st class Design Degree in Spatial & Regulatory studies, Urban studies, Landscape studies, & Environmental studies (categories 1, 2, 25 & 27 respectively). She participated in the organization of two workshops while her research work has been presented in scientific journals, international conferences and published in the national press. She has taken part in several architectural competitions and has won an Acquisition in the “National Architectural Concept Competition on: Restoration study of Eastern coastal front of Hersonissos in Crete”. Two of her design works were exposed in the ”Biennale Design 2000” exhibition (Saint-Etienne, France): “The antisocial vest” & “The Empty Cone”. In 2012 she participated in the 7th Biennale for Young Greek Architects, held in Athens. Finally, she has received 2 honorary distinctions in the Greek Lighting awards 2022 (Gold award in the category “Landscape” and Silver award in the category “Event lighting”).
