An in-depth theoretical, historical and social reference to the combination of aesthetic ideas and the functionality of forms developed in the decorative arts and design during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Cource content

Its main historical landmarks are:
– The principles of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain and France
– The social / historical / cultural model of Victorian society and its impact on these principles.
– The first major schools of Design in the UK and their importance.
– The great designers and theorists of the time.
– The Grand Exhibition in London in 1851 and the institution of international exhibitions in Europe, in general.
– The important role of Pre-Raphaelite painters in shaping the new ideal for Design.
– The Arts and Crafts Movement
– The importance of Japan in shaping Western Design.
– Art Nouveau in Europe and America.

Programme aims

The aim of the subject is to obtain the cognitive background of the evolutionary course of design, but also of interior decoration, in many cases, the period during which the foundations of modern design and decoration were laid, so that the student has the opportunity for a wider and more complete studying and interpreting issues related to modern or older forms of design. More specifically, the subject is based on extensive reports and analyzes of classic issues of history and design theory that are presented in chronological order from the beginning to the end of the long 19th century.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

After the end of the course students will be able to know:
-The evolution of the industrial and handicraft objects during the important period of 19th century, of the formation of the principles of design on a global scale and especially in Great Britain and the rest of Europe both historically and theoretically.
– The contribution of the Industrial Revolution, but also other forms of production of objects, to the formation of values ​​and trends in the spatial and object design of the 19th and early 20th century.
– The research methodology and the possibility of comparing this knowledge with the modern history of design, but also with their use as a cognitive tool in any research field related to the specific era.
